REED
What started as a lovely catchup lunch with Ava had quickly descended into a hellish experience. The news of Caroline sniffing coke up her perfectly straight upturned nose was the worst news I could have expected. It seemed I just couldnât win.
And to think I used to love that woman so much. Where did it all go wrong? Love and truth were fickle. One day you were riding on the crest of the wave, and the next you found yourself sprawled out on the sand wondering what had happened?
I tried my level best to remain focused on Ava for the duration of our meal together. But it was hard. I went straight back to the office afterward and called my attorney. Something had to be done about it. I couldnât in all good conscience bury my head in the sand and pretend that everything would be okay. Whether Caroline was doing blow at home or around Ollie was irrelevant at that point. It had to stop. Immediately. Even if I had to drag her ass off to rehab.
Jessica had already left the office when I got there. Thankfully. I poured myself a whiskey and sat at my desk. It was important to put together my thoughts before I called Stanley Myers. There was no point in going off, hysterically, when I needed a game plan.
âHello,â I said to the woman who answered the call, âis Stanley available, please?â
âIâm sorry, Sir. Mr. Myers has left for the day. I can ask him to call you back if itâs an emergency.â
âNo, thank you. Itâs important but it can wait until the morning. Would you ask him to call me as soon as he gets into the office, please? Itâs Reed Andrews. He has my number.â
âIâll make sure he gets the message, Mr. Andrews. Have a good evening.â
âThank you.â
Damn it. I was irritated but at the same time, I appreciated the fact that even attorneys needed downtime. The legal profession was akin to the medical fieldâbe on call 24/7 or else! Anyway, there was no point in hanging around the office like a spare part, so I left.
I needed some time alone, so I went down to the club and went paddling by myself. The water whispered to my soul. It was on the water that wisdom and reason had the opportunity to pierce my otherwise busy mind.
Stuck between two women. Wanting to get as far away from one as I possibly could and wishing to be nearer to the other. These were the thoughts that occupied my mind as I continuously pulled the paddle through the water.
Both were beautiful on the outsideâno maybe about thatâbut they couldnât have been more different on the inside. To be fair to Caroline, she wasnât all bad. We made the perfect couple when we first got together. Unfortunately, I didnât recognize the emptiness she had in the soulâthe one she tried to fill with attention and material things.
I understood it too late. I supposed it was unfair of me to blame her solely.
